INTRODUCTION
As part our B.Ed curriculum we have to conduct  a conscientization programme. I conducted an awareness programme on the topic “The Impact of Advertisement in School Children”. Advertisement plays an important role in buying any product. It even decides and shapes the taste, behaviour, life style, culture, etc. of an individual. Since children are innocent, and have a tendency to believe whatever they see in television, they easily become the prey of advertisement. That is why after watching Kinder Joy’s advertisement, a girl buys Kinder Joy for Girls which is pink in colour, and a boy buys Kinder Joy for Boys. Through this we can understand that school children are badly influenced by advertisements.

OBJECTIVES
·               To impart knowledge about the deception in advertisements.
·               To decode the false ideologies which are propagated by advertisements.
·               To provide knowledge about capitalist culture.
·               To provide information about the impact of advertisement among students.
ORGANISATION OF ACTIVITIES
As part of the B. Ed curriculum and practice, we, the teacher trainees, had conducted a conscientization programme during our training session. We had to select a socially relevant topic considering the mentalities of the students of New. Higher. Secondary. School, Nellimoodu.
It is an individual activity. So I decided to conduct an awareness programme on the topic “The Impact of Advertisement in School Children”. The information was collected from various sources such as newspaper, magazine, social media and journals for making the programme a successful one. After the collection of the materials, I arranged the information in a chronological order.
The next step was to collect some attractive advertisements from newspaper and magazine. Out of the collected advertisemets, I selected a few advertisements which I pasted in a chart.  In order to make the class lively, I employed audio- visual aids such as the use of white board, flash cards and a chart. These aids helped me to get students’ attention over the programme.
The programme was conducted in 9.B class at 11 o’ clock on 23 January 2017. We started the programme with a prayer song which Athira, a student from the 9.B class, did. After that, I asked the students to make maximum use of the awareness class. Then I continued with the programme. After I concluded the topic, I collected feedback from the class by asking their experience about the class. Then I ended the awareness programme with a national anthem.
FEEDBACK FROM STUDENTS
Almost all the students who attended opined that the class was very beneficial and effective. Some opined more programmes like these must be conducted in schools. They recommended that it should be good if the teachers give awareness about the treacherous nature of advertisements to other classes as well. On the whole, majority gave a good opinion about our programme.
FINDINGS AND SUGGESTIONS
·        Advertisements create gender stereotypes among school children.
·        It promotes elite culture.
·        It decides the dressing code of the students.
·        These awareness programmes helps students to widen their perspectives.
·        It promotes and encourages to critically analyse the advertisement rather than blindly accepting its false ideologies.
Suggestions include;
·        Students must be made aware of the capitalistic world which indirectly tells them what they have to wear and eat.
·        Proper awareness classes should be provided frequently to the students.
·        Teachers should encourage students to criticize and decode the advertisements.
CONCLUSION
I think the programme was effective. I could create awareness among the students about the impact of advertisement in school children. I could satisfy the objectives of the programme also. The students were active and attentive throughout the class. Some of them commented that owing to advertisements’ impact they argued with their parents to buy them fast food instead of foods which are prepared by their mothers. All the students promised that they will think and act rather than blindly following the advertisements. It was a good class.
