The Anti-Narcotic Club of ABC Higher Secondary School conducted a seminar on “Dangers of Drug Abuse” on 20 Feb. 2019. The venue was at the school auditorium. The seminar began at 10 a.m with a prayer by the school choir. After that, Mr. Venugopalan M.G., the Principal of ABC Higher Secondary School, delivered the welcome speech.
Then the presidential address was delivered by Dr. Kumaresh, the Director of Anti-Narcotic Cell. He mentioned that if a person abuses the drug, he will lose his ability to solve “life's situations” through “perseverance”, “self-discipline” and “mental effort”. He also added that the negative effect of the drug is that if a healthy person takes drugs without any disease, it will destroy the healthy functioning of the brain and the body.
Dr. Satheesh Chandran, IAS inaugurated the ceremony. Finally, Smt. Sathi, the ward Councillor, delivered felicitation. She told the reason why drug addicts cannot stop drug addiction is that the drug's harmful side effect is not immediately apparent. The only symptoms which will the drug addicts show are “incidental delirious” effects and “death from overdose”. In extreme cases, drug addicts will face health issues.
There were four paper presenters for the paper presentation. They are Adithya, Vennila, Varsha, Vichithra and Sangeetha. Adithya presented a paper on the topic “Sensual Drugs and Medicines”. In this paper, she makes a distinction between medicines and sensual drug. Sensual drugs are those drugs which are not needed for the body.
Vennila presented a paper on the topic “Drug Addiction and Personality Disorders”. She tells that a person who is addicted to drug begins to suffer depression, physical problems and show personality changes. He becomes suspicious and introvert.
Varsha presented a paper on the topic “Physical Impacts of Drug Abuse”. She mentions that if the drug addicts use dirty needles and solutions which are used for injecting drugs, it will cause “abscesses” in the arms and veins, liver disease, venereal disease and kidney, and brain infections.
Vichithra presented a paper on the topic “Mental Impacts of Drug Abuse”. She points out that the drug addicts can't even know what is happening around them and to whom they are talking. His mind will be always disturbed. Hence his mental condition can be compared to “paranoia”.
Sangeetha presented a paper on the topic “Social Impacts of Drug Abuse”. She mentioned that drug addicts feel that everyone is looking at him strangely because he cannot realize whether an individual is smiling or angry with him.
After the paper presentations, there was a discussion about the papers. The audience asked so many questions to the paper presenters and cleared their doubts. After that, Krishna, the school leader, delivered the vote of thanks. He thanked everyone who attended the seminar and made it a successful one. The seminar ended with the National Anthem.
